A visit to Saligao Garbage Treatment plant & Van Bhavan

A field trip was organized on  March 13, 2020 for the Final year Civil Engineering students at Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt, Ltd., Saligao – Goa. The field trip was coordinated by Prof. Satyesh Kakodkar & Prof. Prachi Dessai.

In the morning session, the students visited the Garbage treatment plant which is operated by Hindustan Waste Treatment Private Limited (HWTPL). The plant has a desired capacity of 100 tons a day. The facility also generates 4 MW of electricity out of Methane gas, which is used to power the plant. Fresh waste brought in from Calangute and Candolim village panchayats is being treated at the plant. The work at the garbage treatment plant (GTP) is being conducted  from 9.30 am to 6:00 pm. Mr. Saeil Kamat explained the detailed process involved in the segregation of the municipal waste and the available facilities at the plant.

In the afternoon session the students visited Van Bhavan, Althino – Panjim. The building is designed as per Indian Green Building norms and registered under GRIHA. It’s a ground plus three storeyed building having a built-up area of 4,176 sqm. The Ground floor has parking arrangement consisting of 25 cars and 40 two wheelers and other facilities like driver’s room, BMS room etc. The building consists of rooms for Goa Broadband Network (GBBN), Independent Data Centre (IDC), State Data Centre (SDC), Directorate of Information Technology and Infotech Corporation of Goa Ltd. The Terrace accommodates solar panels, mechanical utility services, dish antennas etc. The building has incorporated energy efficient materials such as fly-ash bricks, double glazed unit for external façade, LED internal lights, solar powered street lights, low flow fixtures for reducing excess water, rainwater harvesting tank to reduce rainwater run-off in the surrounding etc.
