The Audit Course in Maintenance Engineering was conducted by the Mechanical Engineering Department of Don Bosco College of Engineering for Third-Year Mechanical Engineering students during their sixth semester in the academic year 2025-26. The course was designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to evaluate, analyze, and improve maintenance processes in industrial environments. It provided a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles, techniques, and best practices associated with maintenance activities, thereby enhancing students' awareness of the role of maintenance in ensuring equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and productivity. The course was coordinated by Prof. Swapnil Ramani and Prof. Sharad Shanbhag along with Mr. Sujesh Girodkar.
Five audit course sessions were conducted throughout the semester by speakers from industry and academia.
Session 1: Technical Talk on Maintenance Practices-Industrial Perspective
This session was conducted on 13th February by Mr. Benedicto Andrade, a maintenance and project execution professional with extensive experience in plant operations and reliability services. During the session, Mr. Andrade highlighted the critical role of structured maintenance in achieving operational excellence in large-scale industrial environments. Drawing upon his experience at Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd., he emphasized the importance of planned equipment maintenance and discussed a comprehensive maintenance strategy that integrates preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance approaches to enhance equipment reliability, reduce downtime, and improve overall plant performance.
Session 2: Maintenance Procedure for CNC Machines
This session was conducted on 20th February by the in-house resource persons, Prof. Gaurish Samant and Mr. Diptesh Naik. The session provided hands-on exposure to preventive and corrective maintenance practices for CNC machines used in modern manufacturing industries. Through live demonstrations and troubleshooting exercises, the resource persons explained essential maintenance checks and best practices. The session enhanced students’ understanding of CNC machine maintenance and highlighted the importance of systematic inspection and preventive measures in ensuring reliable machine performance.
Session 3 and 4: Practical sessions on dismantling and assembling different components
The third and fourth sessions were conducted on 10th and 17th April. During these sessions, students were assigned equipment such as an air compressor, manual press machine, transformer coil winding machine, and a 2-stroke engine for dismantling and reassembly. The activity provided hands-on experience in understanding the construction and working of mechanical components, proper use of tools, systematic dismantling procedures, component inspection, and accurate reassembly, thereby enhancing students' practical maintenance and troubleshooting skills.
Session 5: Technical Talk on Maintenance of Electric Vehicles: Owner’s Standpoint
An interactive session on “Maintenance of Electric Vehicles: Owner’s Standpoint” was conducted by Prof. Aniket Naik on 22nd May. The session covered key aspects of EV maintenance, including battery systems, charging, thermal management, and routine servicing, with practical insights from the Tata Tiago EV Long Range.
