A field visit to Salaulim Dam and the Water Treatment Plant located near the dam was organised on 11th August 2026 for the first-year Civil Engineering students to provide students with practical exposure to water resource management, dam infrastructure, and water treatment processes. The visit was coordinated by Prof. Satyesh Kakodkar, Prof. Vanessa Fernandes, and Prof. Jesselyn Fernandes.
The visit to Salaulim Dam enabled students to understand the importance of dams and reservoirs in the storage and management of water resources. Students observed the major features and associated structures of the dam and gained an understanding of concepts such as water storage, inflow and outflow, spillway arrangements, reservoir management, and dam safety. The faculty explained the significance of proper operation and maintenance of such infrastructure for ensuring a reliable water supply.
The students subsequently visited the Water Treatment Plant near Salaulim Dam, where they were introduced to the various stages involved in treating raw water for potable use. The treatment processes and their functions were explained, including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Students also gained an understanding of the importance of monitoring water quality parameters and ensuring that treated water meets the required standards before distribution.
The field visit helped students connect theoretical knowledge from Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Water Supply Engineering with practical applications. It also highlighted the role of civil engineers in the planning, operation, maintenance, and sustainable management of water infrastructure.
Overall, the field visit was an informative and enriching learning experience. It enhanced the students’ understanding of dam engineering, water treatment processes, and sustainable water resource management. The practical exposure gained during the visit complemented classroom learning and provided valuable insight into the functioning of essential water infrastructure.
