An online webinar on “Mastering Financial Skills for Youth” was held on 20th August 2026 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The session was conducted in online mode through Zoom and was organized by Computer Engineering Department in association with C-CODES to create awareness among students and young people about the importance of financial knowledge and responsible money management.
The webinar covered several important topics related to financial planning and the securities market. The session began with an introduction to the Securities Market – Level 1, where participants were given a basic understanding of the financial and securities market. The importance of financial awareness and the various opportunities related to careers and jobs in the financial sector were also discussed. It was emphasised that earning money is important, but understanding how to manage and use money wisely is equally essential.
Another important topic covered was Income, Saving and Investing. The participants learned about the difference between income, savings and investments and how proper financial planning can help individuals achieve their future goals. An illustration comparing saving and investment was also explained, helping us understand that saving generally focuses on keeping money safely for future needs, while investment aims to grow money over a longer period of time.
The session also discussed the Cost of Living and the Value of Money. We learned that the cost of daily necessities and services can increase over time, making it important to plan finances carefully and understand the changing value of money. Different investment products were also compared, giving participants a basic idea of the various options available for investing and the importance of choosing suitable investment options based on financial goals and risk.
Finally, the concept of Compounding was explained as one of the key principles of wealth creation. We learned how money can grow over time when the returns earned are reinvested, allowing an investment to generate returns on both the original amount and the accumulated returns.
Overall, the webinar was highly informative and useful. It helped participants understand the importance of financial literacy, saving, investing, financial planning and making responsible financial decisions. The session encouraged young people to develop good financial habits at an early stage and work towards a financially secure future. The student coordinators were Vanessa Fernandes and Basil Shaik and faculty coordinator Prof Merwyn D’Souza.
