The two-day conference TGS 2026 was organised at the JN Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of
Science (IISc), Bangalore, on 17th and 18th July 2026. The conference brought together
academicians, researchers, industry professionals, and students from premier institutions across
India and abroad to discuss recent developments and innovations in geotechnical engineering and
allied disciplines. The programme included keynote theme sessions, expert panel discussions,
parallel technical sessions, exhibitions, cultural events, and networking opportunities. Asst
Prof.Vanessa Fernandes presented her research paper on “Estimation of Erosion Rate in Goa
using Hole Erosion Test" in the Parallel Session on Geotechnical Investigation and Site
Characterisation. The presentation highlighted the erosion characteristics of lateritic soils in Goa
using the Hole Erosion Test (HET), emphasising the influence of hydraulic conditions on soil
erodibility and the importance of erosion assessment for sustainable geotechnical design. The
presentation generated valuable discussions with experts and fellow researchers, who provided
constructive feedback and suggestions for future work.Asst Prof Swaroopa Sail presented on
“Z-score normalization in random forest for standard penetration test value prediction”.Asst
Prof Starina Dias presented her paper on “Encased Stone Column Technology”.
The inaugural day commenced with the inauguration at the J. N. Tata Auditorium, followed by
technical sessions on Geosynthetics and Ground Improvement, Geotechnical Investigation and
Site Characterisation, and Seismology, Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and
Microzonation. Distinguished speakers from institutions including IIT Hyderabad, IIT Dharwad,
IIT Guwahati, IIT Ropar, IISc Bangalore, and NIT Surathkal shared their research findings and
practical experiences. Interactive panel discussions enabled participants to engage with experts
on emerging challenges and future research directions in geotechnical engineering. The
conference also featured parallel technical sessions covering a wide range of topics such as
ground improvement techniques, computational geomechanics, artificial intelligence and
machine learning applications, site characterization, slope stability, numerical modelling, and
sustainable infrastructure. Researchers presented innovative studies on bio-mediated soil
stabilisation, geosynthetics, machine learning-based geotechnical analysis, probabilistic slope
stability, and seismic hazard assessment.
The second day included theme sessions on Computational Methods and Geomechanics, Rock
Mechanics, Tailings Dams and Mining, and Sustainability, Social Impact and Education. These
sessions emphasized the application of advanced computational techniques, sustainable
construction materials, artificial intelligence, digital twin technology, and environmentally
responsible engineering practices. Additional parallel sessions showcased research on sustainable
pavement materials, biosorbents, recycled construction materials, earthquake engineering, and
advanced geotechnical investigations.
