PRAYoG Phase-I Session on “Research Methodology and Literature Search” Held at Don Bosco College of Engineering

As part of PRAYoG – Promoting Research Among Youth of Goa, an initiative of the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Goa, the Research & Development (R&D) Cell of Don Bosco College of Engineering (DBCE), Fatorda, Goa, organized a Phase-I session on “Research Methodology and Literature Search” on 24 September 2026.

The session was conducted by the institution’s PRAYoG Mentor, Dr. Manideepa Mukherjee, BITS Pilani K. K. Birla Goa Campus, who has been allotted as the mentor for the institution for all three phases of the PRAYoG programme.

Dr. Manideepa Mukherjee provided an engaging and comprehensive introduction to the research process and guided students through the various stages involved in undertaking meaningful research. The session covered important aspects such as what research is, the research process, sources of research ideas, identification of research problems, selection of a good research topic, formulation of research objectives, literature search, sources of literature, and effective ways of reading research papers.

The mentor also explained how students can identify research gaps, including different types of research gaps, and how these gaps can be translated into meaningful research questions. Further topics included hypothesis development, planning a research project, research ethics and integrity, and common mistakes to be avoided while conducting research.

Practical examples were used to differentiate between good and poorly formulated research topics, helping students understand how to refine a broad area of interest into a focused and researchable problem. The interactive nature of the session encouraged students to ask questionsand actively participate in discussions. There was enthusiastic interaction between the students and Dr. Manideepa Mukherjee throughout the session.

The programme was attended by Third Year (TE) students from the Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electronics and Computer Science departments, along with the respective R&D Departmental Coordinators: Dr. Amrita Nayak, Dr. Chetan Gaonkar, Dr. Shreyas Simu, and Dr. Nitendra Palankar.

The session was coordinated by Dr. Shwetha Prasanna, R&D Cell Chairperson, Don Bosco College of Engineering.

The Phase-I session provided students with a strong foundation in research methodology and encouraged them to develop a systematic approach towards identifying research problems, reviewing existing literature, recognizing research gaps, and planning future research projects. The programme marked an important step towards fostering a research-oriented culture among students and strengthening student participation in research and innovation activities under the PRAYoG initiative.
